What a 1st grade student learns in Vocabulary
Grade 1 vocabulary centers on using context, affixes, and root words to determine meanings of unknown and multiple-meaning words, while building understanding of word relationships, categories, shades of meaning, and applying newly acquired words and phrases from texts and conversations.

- 3Identify frequently occurring root words and their inflectional forms (e.g., look/looks/looked/looking)
- 4Determine or clarify meanings of unknown and multiple-meaning words using grade-1 strategies
- 5Ask and answer questions to clarify meanings of words and phrases in informational text
- 6Identify words and phrases in stories or poems that suggest feelings or appeal to the senses
- 7Sort words into categories (e.g., colors, clothing, animals) to understand concepts
