What a 1st grade student learns in Geography
Grade 1 Geography introduces students to basic mapping skills, local environments, cardinal directions, and the concepts of community and place, helping them understand where they live and how location affects daily life.
The skills for the year
- 1Identify and describe features of the local neighborhood and community
- 2Recognize and use basic map symbols and keys
- 3Locate and name familiar places on a simple map (e.g., school, home, park)
- 4Understand the concepts of near, far, left, right, up, and down on maps
- 5Identify and use cardinal directions (north, south, east, west) on maps and in local space
- 6Distinguish between land and water on maps and globes
- 7Identify and describe simple physical features (river, hill, lake, road) in the local environment
- 8Understand what a map and a globe represent and how they differ
- 9Practice drawing simple maps of familiar places (classroom, playground)
- 10Describe how people use natural and built features in the community
- 11Identify own city/town, state, and country by name
- 12Recognize that different places have different weather, land, and people
- 13Understand and describe basic human-made and natural resources found locally
- 14Demonstrate safe and respectful ways to explore and observe the local environment
- 15Describe how geography affects how people live and what they do in their community
