What a 1st grade student learns in Writing
Grade 1 writing centers on producing complete sentences and short structured pieces across opinion, informative, and narrative genres, while mastering foundational grammar, capitalization, punctuation, and phonetic/conventional spelling. Students move from emergent kindergarten writing to independent composition with adult guidance for revision and shared research.
The skills for the year
- 1Print all upper- and lowercase letters legibly and fluently
- 2Produce complete simple sentences with capital letters and end punctuation
- 3Capitalize names of people and dates
- 4Use commas in dates and to separate words in a series
- 5Spell common-pattern words and high-frequency irregular words conventionally; spell unknowns phonetically
- 6Use common, proper, and possessive nouns
- 7Form regular plural nouns and apply basic subject-verb agreement
- 8Use personal, possessive, and indefinite pronouns
- 9Use verbs to show past, present, and future
- 10Use frequently occurring adjectives, conjunctions (and/but/or/so/because), determiners, and prepositions
- 11Expand and produce declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory sentences
- 12Write opinion pieces that name a topic or book, state an opinion, supply a reason, and give closure
- 13Write informative/explanatory pieces that name a topic, supply facts, and give closure
- 14Write narratives that recount two or more sequenced events with details, temporal words, and closure
- 15With guidance, focus on a topic and strengthen writing by adding details from feedback
- 16Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g., how-to sequences)
- 17With guidance, recall experiences or gather information from sources to answer a question in writing
- 18With guidance, use digital tools to produce and publish writing
