What a 8th grade student learns in Reading & Literature
Grade 8 Reading & Literature centers on rigorous analysis of complex literary texts, requiring students to cite the strongest textual evidence, track theme development through characters/setting/plot, and evaluate authors' craft (dialogue, word choice/allusions, structure, point of view/dramatic irony). Students also examine adaptations and modern works' transformations of traditional myths/stories while independently comprehending high-end 6-8 complexity band literature.

- 1Cite the textual evidence that most strongly supports analysis of explicit meaning and inferences in literary texts
- 2Determine a theme or central idea and analyze its full development in relation to characters, setting, and plot
- 3Provide objective, accurate summaries of stories, dramas, and poems
- 4Analyze how specific lines of dialogue or incidents propel action, reveal character aspects, or provoke decisions
- 5Determine figurative and connotative meanings of words and phrases as used in grade-level literary texts
- 6Analyze the impact of word choices (including analogies and allusions) on meaning and tone
- 7Compare and contrast the structures of two or more texts and analyze how each structure contributes to meaning and style
- 8Analyze how differences in characters' versus readers' points of view (e.g., dramatic irony) create suspense or humor
- 9Analyze the extent to which filmed or live productions stay faithful to or depart from source texts/scripts and evaluate directors' or actors' choices
- 10Analyze how modern fiction draws on themes, event patterns, or character types from myths, traditional stories, or religious works and renders the material new
- 11Interpret figures of speech (such as verbal irony and puns) in literary context
- 12Distinguish among connotations of words with similar denotations as they shape literary meaning
- 13Use context clues, Greek/Latin affixes and roots, and reference materials to determine meanings of unknown words in complex literature
- 14Acquire and accurately use grade-appropriate academic and domain-specific vocabulary for literary analysis
- 15Independently read and comprehend literature (stories, dramas, poems) at the high end of the grades 6-8 text complexity band
