Grade 3 Reading & Literature centers on independently comprehending complex stories, dramas, and poetry at the high end of the grades 2–3 band by analyzing characters, central messages, point of view, and text structure while mastering multisyllabic decoding and fluent oral reading.

- 5Recounting fables, folktales, and myths from diverse cultures and determining the central message, lesson, or moral
- 6Explaining how key details convey the central message or moral of a story
- 7Describing characters’ traits, motivations, and feelings
- 8Explaining how characters’ actions contribute to the sequence of events
- 9Determining the meaning of literal and nonliteral words and phrases as used in a text
- 10Referring to chapters, scenes, and stanzas when discussing stories, dramas, and poems
