What a 3rd grade student learns in Math
Grade 3 math develops student fluency with multiplication and division, deepens understanding of concepts of area and fractions, and strengthens problem-solving with increasingly complex word problems. Students expand number sense to 1,000 and apply new arithmetic operations to real-world contexts.
The skills for the year
- 1Interpret and represent multiplication as groups of equal objects
- 2Interpret and represent division as sharing or grouping
- 3Fluently multiply and divide within 100 using strategies and memorization
- 4Understand and apply properties of multiplication (commutative, associative, distributive)
- 5Solve two-step word problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
- 6Identify arithmetic patterns and explain them using properties of operations
- 7Understand place value up to 1,000 (hundreds, tens, ones)
- 8Read, write, and compare numbers up to 1,000
- 9Round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100
- 10Add and subtract within 1,000 using place value strategies and algorithms
- 11Multiply one-digit whole numbers by multiples of 10 (e.g., 6 x 40)
- 12Develop a conceptual understanding of fractions as numbers on the number line
- 13Represent and interpret fractions with denominators 2, 3, 4, 6, 8
- 14Compare fractions with the same numerator or denominator
- 15Solve problems involving measurement and estimation of time, liquid volume, and mass
- 16Measure and calculate perimeter of polygons and area by tiling and multiplication
- 17Interpret and create picture graphs and bar graphs to represent data
- 18Classify shapes by attributes (including quadrilaterals)
- 19Recognize and draw scaled picture and bar graphs
- 20Partition shapes into parts with equal areas, expressing the area of each part as a unit fraction
