What a Kindergarten student learns in Spelling
Kindergarten spelling centers on mastering letter-sound correspondences and using them to spell simple words phonetically, while beginning to write common high-frequency words accurately from memory.
The skills for the year
- 1Print all 26 uppercase letters legibly
- 2Print all 26 lowercase letters legibly
- 3Produce the most common sound for each consonant
- 4Produce the short sounds for vowels a, e, i, o, u
- 5Write the correct letter for any given consonant sound
- 6Write the correct letter for any given short-vowel sound
- 7Segment spoken CVC words into beginning, middle, and ending phonemes
- 8Spell simple CVC words phonetically (e.g., cat, bed, pig, hop, sun)
- 9Spell words that begin with continuous sounds (f, l, m, n, r, s)
- 10Spell words that begin with stop sounds (b, d, g, k, p, t)
- 11Spell own first name correctly from memory
- 12Read and spell 20–25 high-frequency sight words (e.g., I, a, the, to, and, is, it, in, my, me)
- 13Distinguish and correctly spell words that differ by one letter/sound (e.g., cat/hat, big/bag)
- 14Use inventive phonetic spelling to represent sounds in unfamiliar words during writing
- 15Write a letter or letters for most consonant and short-vowel sounds heard in words
- 16Begin applying capitalization of the pronoun I when spelling
