What a 7th grade student learns in Writing
Grade 7 writing centers on producing clear, coherent argumentative, informative/explanatory, and narrative texts with increasing sophistication in organization, evidence use, formal style, and research integration, while routinely revising for purpose and audience across short and extended time frames.
The skills for the year
- 1Write arguments that introduce claims, acknowledge opposing claims, and organize reasons and evidence logically
- 2Support claims with logical reasoning and relevant evidence from accurate, credible sources
- 3Use words, phrases, and clauses to create cohesion and clarify relationships among claims, reasons, and evidence
- 4Establish and maintain a formal style and provide a concluding statement that supports the argument
- 5Write informative/explanatory texts that introduce a topic clearly and organize ideas using definition, classification, comparison/contrast, or cause/effect
- 6Develop topics with relevant facts, definitions, concrete details, quotations, and examples; include formatting, graphics, or multimedia when useful
- 7Use appropriate transitions and precise, domain-specific vocabulary while maintaining formal style in informative writing
- 8Write narratives that establish context and point of view, introduce narrator/characters, and organize a logical event sequence
- 9Use narrative techniques (dialogue, pacing, description) plus precise words, sensory language, and varied transitions to develop experiences and convey sequence/shifts
- 10Provide a conclusion that follows from and reflects on the narrated experiences or events
