What a 6th grade student learns in Writing
Students in grade 6 writing develop greater independence and sophistication in composing clear, coherent writing across multiple formats, using evidence and details to support their ideas, and strengthening conventions, organization, and style aligned with grade-level expectations.
The skills for the year

- 4Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas clearly
- 5Develop topic thoroughly with relevant facts, definitions, quotations, or examples
- 6Use appropriate transitions to clarify relationships between ideas
- 7Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences with effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences
- 8Establish a context and introduce a narrator and/or characters for narratives

- 10Conclude writing with effective closure
- 11Plan, revise, edit, and rewrite to improve writing, focusing on purpose and audience
- 12Use technology (keyboarding, online tools) to produce and publish writing and collaborate with others
- 13Conduct short research projects to answer a question, using multiple sources and refocusing as necessary
- 14Gather relevant information from credible print and digital sources; quote or paraphrase sources without plagiarizing
- 15Demonstrate command of standard English grammar and usage when writing
