What a 4th grade student learns in Science
Fourth-grade science centers on energy transfer and conversion, wave properties and information transfer, plant and animal structures that support survival and sensory processing, and Earth’s systems (weathering, erosion, fossils, landforms, natural resources, and hazards).
The skills for the year
- 1Relate an object’s speed to its energy
- 2Provide evidence that energy transfers via sound, light, heat, and electric currents
- 3Predict energy changes when objects collide
- 4Design, test, and refine a device that converts energy from one form to another
- 5Model waves using amplitude and wavelength and show how waves can move objects
- 6Model how light reflecting from objects and entering the eye enables vision
- 7Generate and compare solutions that use patterns to transfer information
- 8Construct an argument that plants and animals have internal and external structures supporting survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction
- 9Use a model to describe how animals receive sensory information, process it in the brain, and respond
- 10Identify patterns in rock formations and fossils that evidence landscape change over time
- 11Make observations or measurements showing effects of weathering and rates of erosion by water, ice, wind, or vegetation
- 12Analyze map data to describe patterns of Earth’s features
- 13Obtain and combine information showing that energy and fuels come from natural resources and affect the environment
- 14Generate and compare multiple solutions that reduce impacts of natural Earth processes on humans
