What a 2nd grade student learns in Science
In second grade, science emphasizes building foundational skills in inquiry and observation while exploring properties of matter, life cycles of organisms, Earth's systems, and patterns in the sky and weather.
The skills for the year
- 1Ask questions about natural phenomena and conduct simple investigations
- 2Plan and carry out observational and hands-on science investigations
- 3Describe and classify materials by observable properties (texture, color, size, flexibility)
- 4Investigate how materials can be changed by heating or cooling
- 5Construct simple arguments about which materials are best for a purpose based on their properties
- 6Understand and model the life cycle of plants and animals, including birth, growth, reproduction, and death
- 7Compare the diversity of life in different habitats and discuss animal and plant adaptations
- 8Describe relationships between plants and animals in a habitat
- 9Explore how wind and water can change the shape of land
- 10Communicate solutions to reduce the impact of humans on Earth’s land, water, air, and living things
- 11Record, analyze, and describe weather data using simple tools (thermometer, rain gauge, wind vane)
- 12Recognize and describe patterns in daily and seasonal weather changes
- 13Identify daily and seasonal patterns of sunlight and temperature
- 14Observe and predict changes in the sky, such as movement of Sun and Moon
- 15Analyze maps and models to show Earth's features and patterns
- 16Engage in scientific discussions using evidence from investigations
